Applied music lessons are open to students who successfully pass an audition or receive permission from the instructor.
Students must contact the academic advisor for more information on the number of credit hours per semester they can enroll in. Enrollment in 3 credit hours is restricted to graduate students. Visit the Degree Requirements page for more details.
Audition
Following the initial advising, any student who has declared music as a major must audition on their performing instrument before at least two full-time faculty members for approval to enroll in applied music. This audition can take place prior to the semester of enrollment or during the first week of classes.
All students taking private instruction in applied music (including non-major lessons) must perform a jury at the end of each semester, as part of a final examination in that course. Masterclasses are also required as part of applied instruction.
All students taking applied lessons must also be enrolled in an ensemble performing in their major area. i.e. string players need to be in an orchestra, voice majors need to be in a vocal ensemble, etc. All students enrolled in lessons will audition for ensembles during ensemble auditions. Ensemble auditions will be by area (voice, strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, jazz) and students will be placed in an ensemble(s) by their audition.
Studio Teacher Assignments and Changes
(for disciplines with more than one faculty member)
Assignment of students to teachers is the responsibility of the Area Coordinator. Please contact the appropriate area coordinator to request a specific teacher.
In general, students study with the same instructor from semester to semester. If a student desires a change of instructor, the first step is to discuss any concerns with their current teacher in person. If the issue is not resolved, the student should make an appointment to speak with the area coordinator, who will make the final determination of such changes in collaboration with the involved faculty members.
Changes of studio will only be made prior to the beginning of the semester. No changes are allowed in the middle of the current term.
